How to Measure the Inside Leg (Inseam) of Your Trousers

You can measure the inside leg (inseam) of your trousers by following the steps below.
The measuring method can vary depending on the trouser design and how the crotch is stitched, so please choose the option that best matches your trousers.

Types of Trousers

Trousers with a Centre Crease

Trousers without a Centre Crease

Trousers with a Folded Stitch
*These have two visible stitch lines on the inside back seam, and the fabric edges are folded into the seam.

Trousers with an Interlock Stitch
*Overlock stitching is visible on the seam allowance on the inside back seam.

If the fabric overlaps at the crotch
*At the crotch area, the fabric overlaps and no seam is visible on the outside.    

Trousers with a Centre Crease
  1. Lay the trousers flat with the waistband on the left and the right leg underneath.
    (Measure along the inside seam of the right leg)     User-added image  
  2. Place the tape measure at the starting point of the crotch seam     User-added image  
  3. Measure straight down along the inside leg seam to the hem     User-added image

Trousers with a Folded Stitch
 
  1. Lay the trousers flat with the waistband on the left and the right leg facing you.
    (Measure along the inside seam of the right leg)     User-added image  
  2. Place the tape measure at the point where the stitch line starts at the crotch and follow the inside seam to the hem     User-added image  
  3. Measure along the inside leg seam down to the hem User-added image
    If the seam curves, measure in sections, following the curve     User-added image

Trousers with an Interlock Stitch
 
  1. Lay the trousers flat with the waistband on the left and the right leg facing you
    (Measure along the inside seam of the right leg)     User-added image  
  2. Place the tape measure at the stitch line where the overlapping fabric is visible at the crotch seam     User-added image  
  3. Follow the inside seam down to the hem User-added image
    If the seam curves, measure in sections, following the curve     User-added image
